Origin[edit]

South America: Upper Orinoco River basin in Colombia and Venezuela.

Sexing[edit]

Adult males have a much longer and broader head with small odontodes on the sides of head, more odontodes on pectoral fin spine and on the whole body, a bigger dorsal fin and normally a prettier colouration.

Identification[edit]

A striking Pleco, it has a jet black body and fins, females are paler and more of a mottled brown with black spots, bar the first rays on the dorsal and caudal fins which have bands of red-orange.
There are several colour variations of this fish occasionally seen including a "Tiger Fin" which has vibrant orange dorsal and caudal fins with black patches and the "Dragon Fin" which seems similar but with slightly less orange.
